Classic DigiCam

Celebrating the Nostalgia of Retro Digital Photography

My Favorite Classic DigiCam

My favorite DigiCam is the Samsung ST76.

This unassuming little pocket point-and-shoot from 2012 has a unique picture aesthetic that I absolutely love! The Samsung ST76 is incredibly tiny! It’s my smallest DigiCam, measuring about 3.5″ wide, 2″ tall, and 3/4″ thick. Fits easily into almost any pocket, so I can carry it everywhere and it never gets in the way. It has a small 1/2.3″ 16-megapxiel CCD sensor and a f/2.5-6.3 25mm-125mm (equivalent) 5x zoom lens.

What makes the ST76 unique is Samsung’s Retro Style Smart Filter, which produces a 1960’s and 1970’s color film vibe—sometimes similar to some American New Color photographs—and not the quintessential DigiCam aesthetic. I love the vintage-film-like pictures that this camera captures—it may be a one-trick-pony, but it does that one trick very well!

I found my Samsung ST76 at Goodwill for about $18 after tax, which is considerably less than the original $130 price-tag. It was in nearly mint condition. The camera uses a Micro-SD card, and I use an adapter so I can transfer the files to my phone. Definitely worth buying if you can find it.

  5. […] My favorite Classic DigiCam is the Samsung ST76. Its tiny size—my smallest camera—makes it especially great for travel, as it never gets in the way, and fits into any pocket. What I appreciate most about it, though, is the Retro Style Smart Filter, which gives pictures a vintage aesthetic as if they were captured in the 1960’s or ’70’s or even early ’80’s. These could be prints in an old picture album, except that I captured them last month while along California’s central coast. No editing, the images look great straight-out-of-camera. […]

  7. I really am enjoying and appreciating this blog, Ritchie. I have one specific question for you – about the Samsung ST76 – and its sibling, the ST66. As far as I can tell, the two cameras appear to be identical – EXCEPT the ST76 has optical image stabilization, and the ST66 does not. Are there any other differences you know of?

    1. I kind of stopped because I just got real busy, but would love to jump back into this soon.

I don’t think there’s any other difference other than the OIS. I’m not sure how much of a difference it even makes—it might not be much. The ST76 was only $10 more than the ST66.

  8. Thanks for the quick answer, Ritchie. I’m considering diving back into the digicam universe (I haven’t had/used one for awhile) and will update you on my own ‘journey’. And once more, thanxxx again for this very cool website!

      1. One more question Ritchie – any thoughts or recommendations on the maximum size/capacity MicroSD card to get for this camera? These days 128Gb seems standard but decades ago, when the camera was actually manufactured, I imagine Max capacity would have been closer to 8gb or 16gb – what would you recommend, please? THANKS!

      2. Definitely less is more. 4gb seems to work in most of these cameras, but I think there are some that need 2gb or less. 8gb will probably work in many of them, but 16gb will work in fewer, and I’d avoid it.

  9. I actually went ahead and pulled the trigger on a truly inexpensive 16Gb MicroSD card before you posted your suggestions and, so far at least, it seems to be working just fine inside my newly purchased (and relatively lightly used, as far as I can tell) ST76. And I have to say, you were 1000% correct in your assessment of the colors and tonalities which the Retro Smart Filter is producing. Truly lovely tones so far.

Here is a quick link to a short review I posted of the camera on another website, complete with a handful of pictures (that I hope you enjoy)–
